Monday Meal Plan Crock Pot Whole Chicken with Recipe and Estimated Food Cost

I do my meal planning two weeks at at time but I thought that it would be nice to share the recipes and the estimates food cost for each meal that I make during the week. Meal Planning and Shopping on a Budget

This is my meal plan for Monday night:

Monday- Crock Pot Whole Chicken - 6 Servings

Estimated Cost:  Total: $5.75         Per Serving: $0.96

Ingredients:

Whole Chicken - $1.99/LB = $5
Large Yellow Onion - $0.78/LB = $0.70
2 TBS Vegetable Oil - $2.50 = $0.05
1/2 Cup Water
*Chicken Seasoning/Rub of Your Choice*
I Use-
Garlic Powder
Paprika
Sage
Salt
Pepper

Directions:

First Unwrap the chicken, remove innards from the cavity and rinse the chicken under cold water.

After rinsing the chicken, dry off with a paper towel.

Put olive oil into the bottom of the crock pot and turn on to high.

Chop up onion and place in the bottom of the crock pot.

In a separate bowl combine all of the spices.

Rub the spice mixture all over the outside of the chicken.

Poor the water into the bottom of the crock pot with onion.

Place chicken into the crock pot on high heat.

Cook on high for 2 hours

After 2 hours cook on low for additional 5 hours.

Serve.

Your chicken should just fall off of the bone! I like to cut it off of the bone and serve with mash potatoes and some other vegetable like corn or salad.
The best part is that you can use the bones and left over parts to make a great broth in the same crock pot! Just put in all of the bones as well as the chopped up vegetables you like to use in your chicken broth and let it cook overnight on low. In the morning you can strain it and then place it in containers to freeze for future use!

DIY Mail Organizer For Kitchen

If you are anything like me I can't stand it when mail and papers get piled up on my kitchen table. I like everything to have its own place so that when I need it I can find it easily...rather than having to look 3 or 4 places before I find it. I saw this post on Pinterest how a lady used a file folder box to organize her command center and I thought that I would give it a try as well!

DIY Mail and Organizer for the Kitchen

All that I used for this project was:

• File folder box
• Hanging folders
• Calendar
• Pen/pencil cup
• Magnetic notepad
• Magnets
• Notebook
• 3 Ring binder
• Hole Puncher
• Envelopes

This is what I had to start out with:

And this was on a good day : /

The first thing I did was go through everything and decided what I wanted or needed to keep in the kitchen, what needed to be pitched, and what could go into our filing cabinet in the office.

I organized everything that was going to stay in the kitchen into these folders

* My Husband's Stuff
* My Stuff
* Bills
* Other Miscellaneous Stuff

I like to use www.couponmom.com when I get ready to go grocery shopping so I used their method for organizing my coupons and adds. To do this I used a 3 ring binder and a few envelopes with holes punched into the top.

I organized my coupons by
* The Sunday Adds
       * Smart Source
       * P&G
       * Red Plum
* Grocery
* Clothing
* Restaurants
* Other A.K.A Diapers, Wipes...etc.

I took a 5X7 envelope and punched a whole into the top of the fold.

I then wrote the name of each type of coupons I was going to put into them with a black marker so it would be easy to sort.

I then put all the coupons into their appropriate envelope and then put all the envelopes into the 3 ring binder.

I do all of my grocery shopping and meal planning two weeks at a time and I have a notebook for this. Meal planning and shopping on budget.html In the notebook I have a list of all of my family's favorite recipes as well as normal monthly bills. I also wanted to include the notebook for lists and other things I might need to write down.

I put all of the folders, the 3 ring binder, and the notebook into my folder box.

Now each one of us has our own folder, plus one for bills and other miscellaneous stuff. My notebook and binder fits in neatly as wells, and I placed a calendar on the fridge right next to it to lets up know what is going on at a glance. I also put a notepad with a magnet on the fridge underneath the calendar to write down items that we run out of during the two weeks and will need to replace the next time I go shopping. Finally the pencil/pen holder right next to it makes for convince.

I hope that this will help eliminate those piles of papers on my counter and table as well as make everything easier to find!

Basic Shopping List

I always do my shopping for two weeks all at one time and I use this shopping list to make it easier. If you want to know more about how I plan and shop for all our meals just once every two weeks here is the link:

Meal Planning and Shopping On a Budget DIY Mom

When I do my shopping list for the two weeks I start by planning my menu for the two weeks and then I refer back to my basic shopping list that I have saved on the computer. I have it set up in a table so that I can keep track of my basic ingredients I need each time I go shopping and how much it normally cost me. As I find new recipes I add the ingredients to the list when I get home from shopping with the price so that next time I know how much it will cost me to make that recipe. I like doing this because I just check what I need for my shopping list and then I can calculate how much it will approximately cost me. I then can change meals if I need to to stay under budget or I can add a few items if I have some extra money to work with.

Here is what my shopping list looks like:

Once I have everything I need on the list I can just print this off and take it with me to the store to refer back to. Then I know if something is cheaper or has gone up in price.

I hope this helps! You can make your own shopping list that fits your family and use it to help you save money as well!

Happy Shopping!

Sample Menu for Shopping on a Budget

I thought that I would give everyone an example of some of the typical meals that I use when I do my meal planning. I love to make a menu for us to use so that things are easier and smoother around our house as well as save us money!
Here is a link that tells you more in detail about how I do it.

DIY Mom: Meal Planning and Shopping on a Budget

When I sit down to do my menu for the two weeks I always start with our family's favorites:
Tacos
Spaghetti
Homemade Pizza
etc.

I try to think about things that we have going on during the weeks so that I can plan something I can either make ahead of time or that is quick. If all else fails I always have stuff on hand to make sandwiches when we are in a hurry.

Here is what I have planned for the next two weeks:

Monday: Sirloin Sir-Fry (We had some sirloin left over from a family night with my parents...I don't normally buy sirloin)
Tuesday: Tater Tot Casserole (Jake has a class at 5:30 so I can make this ahead of time and pop it in for when we get home at about 6:30)
Wednesday: Grilled Italian Chicken
Thursday: Hamburgers
Friday: Homemade Pizza
Saturday: Roasted Chicken with Lemon Vegetables
Sunday: French Toast with Sausage
Monday: Maple Glazed Chicken
Tuesday: Tacos (Jake has class but tacos only take about 20 mins to get ready)
Wednesday: Chicken & Rice
Thursday: Spaghetti
Friday: Hot dogs
Saturday: Mac & Cheese Casserole
Sunday: BLTs (Husband comes home from Drill so this is quick and easy for when he gets home)

I have recipes and a list of ingredients for each meal on my computer so that when I make my shopping list for the two weeks I have a list of ingredients and what I need to make it each meal.

This works so well for my family because we know what we are having for supper and I already have everything to make it so I avoid running to the grocery store and spending more money.

Meal Planning and Shopping on a Budget

I know that my family is not the only one that is struggling to make ends meet and save money so I thought that I would share a few ways that I do it. One of the biggest expenses in my family is groceries and I save money by meal planning and sticking to a tight budget when I go grocery shopping.

Every two weeks when my hubby gets paid I set out to make a list of meals that we can have for the next two weeks and everything that we will need to prepare them. I literally PLAN everything I will need for the next two weeks. At first it was hard to make a list of every item that I would need for the next two weeks but I started keeping track of all the ingredients that I needed for each recipe on my computer so when I made my shopping list I could refer back to it to make sure I did not miss anything.

When I am getting ready for the next two weeks I first take inventory of what we have on hand. I write it all down and then I go through the task of planning the meals that we will be having for the next two weeks. I start with the basic things that we normally have and then I try to throw in a few different recipes based on what is on sale that week. I try to go through my cook books or Pinterest for inspiration of something different that we can try as well.

I then write it all down on a piece of paper. Two weeks full of meals. Normally we won't actually eat all 14 meals that I have planned for but anything we don't I will use the following weeks. Once I have everything planned I start my list of all the ingredients that I will need when I go to the grocery store. I then go through the grocery store adds to find any coupons for things that I will need and only what I NEED. I normally shop at Costco, HyVee and Wal-mart. These stores all have the best prices, in my opinion. I try to stay away from the frozen food section as wells as the prepackaged foods and snacks. They are way to tempting and are always way more expensive than making it yourself.

Throughout the two weeks I have a notepad on my refrigerator to keep of track of things that we have run out of so that I know what needs to be replaced. These items would include toiletry items and cleaning supplies.

Also I almost never spend money on soda, chips or other items that are unnecessary because they cost too much and we really don't need them. The only time we get that is on special occasions or when we go out to eat. I try not to go out to eat but my family likes to do this as a social activity with everyone so I would so we go about twice out of the two weeks.

Once all the planning is done, I go shopping. I try to go by myself but I normally have to take my two year old daughter with me. I try to plan to go shopping when my husband is home so that I don't have to bring her with me but that is only on the weekends and it is way to busy for me on Saturday or Sunday no matter what time you go. If you can, leave the babies at home. They just prolong the process and usually add unneeded stress. If you have to bring your kids, like I normally do, I set the ground rules first - e.g. she has to ride in the cart to whole time and if she is good and we have extra money left in the budget she will get a treat.

I like to take my time and make sure that I get everything I need and the best deal possible. That way I don't have to make all those random trips to the store to just pick up a "few things." and end up spending way more than I need to.

Once the shopping is done, I put everything away. I separate the everything that I need to freeze and put it all away. Meat it always cheaper if I buy it in bigger packages so I buy the big tubes of ground beef and when I get home I separate them by pound and put them in the own bags and freeze them. I do the same with chicken and any vegetables or fruits I don't plan on using right away or that might go back quickly.

I love the feeling of accomplishment when I am done with everything plus I saved my family a lot of money as well as we will have something healthy every night to eat. If we don't have something planned my parents always try to talk us into going out to eat so this is a way to save us a lot of money plus it is less stressful because I don't have to decided that day I already know what we will be having and I know that I have everything to make it.

Lately I have been trying to get ready for the arrival of our new addition in September so I have been looking for good deals that I can use to make meals ahead of time. Things like lasagna, soup, and casseroles that I will be able to make ahead of time and then pop in the oven or on the stove and wont take a lot of time to cook. This is also good if you have a busy week and you don't have a lot of time to cook. This is way cheaper than take-out and healthier!

I know this was a long post but I think that it is important to share. I have loads of ways that I try to save money, but groceries is usually the biggest bill for most families. I used to go every week to the store plus running back and forth to pick up little things that I needed. I would guess that we used to spend an extra $200 a month on groceries before I started meal planing. My goal is to eventually go shopping only once a month but I am slowly working my way up to it. I hope that this post helps you and you are able to save money yourselves! If you have any questions let me know. Also if you have some money saving tips you would like to share, let me know I would love to share them with everyone!

DIY Crochet Baby Beanie

I was looking online for cute hats to bring my baby girl home in from the hospital when I got inspiration for this DIY project. I have crochet a little bit before but this was my first attempt at a hat/beanie. After watching a few YouTube videos over and over again I was surprise at how easy it became after a little bit. I am doing almost all of Adrianna's stuff in yellow and grey so that is what I decided to use for the beanie. This is how it came out:

I liked it so much that I decided to make another one for my oldest daughter as well!

Here is the YouTube videos that I used to help me with the pattern.

DIY Picture Templates

 Here are some templates that I have been working on to make into signs for the girls' bedroom. I am super excited about these! Now all I have to do is find some miss matched picture frames and print them off in the right size!

Baby Room Layout

I went through all of my ideas for the girls' room and put it all together to make this layout for the room. I am hoping that most of the things below I will be able to recreate with a few DIY projects. So expect a lot of baby room DIY projects to come :)
